This little box is usually made from walnut or cherry. The finished box is about seven inches long, five and a half inches wide, and about two and one half inches thick. The drawer box slides out as far as is shown in the photos above. The storage space is about the size of a deck of cards. When the drawer is closed back into the body of the turtle, it locks in place automatically and can not be opened until a series of moves is made. The belly of the turtle is made from a re-sawn and book-matched piece of highly figured wood and the bilateral symmetry resembles a real turtle's belly. The scales and tail on the rump end and the face and head of the turtle are carved in minute detail and each turtle is numbered, dated and signed with my monogram. This design is completely original and no two turtles are exactly alike. Many hours of hand work goes into each turtle box. They are finished with several coats of linseed oil and then they are waxed and buffed before they are shipped. You will not find turtle boxes like these anywhere else.
